Lunch for $15K

A few weeks ago I asked two of my mentors if they would meet me for lunch. I wanted to check in about a few things that had been on my mind and heart. The only thing better than -one-on-one time with Mentors is putting them in a room together! I want to say that it was awesome, fireworks going off, swimming in a sea of brilliance type awesome. It wasn’t. It had a distinctly different feel to it. I want to tell you about it.

My fellow travelers on the Coconut Wireless Life – here is your invitation to lunch. These mentors pull in some serious fees for one-on-one client time, so if you are keeping tabs, this is a $15,000 lunch. It’s gonna be tasty.

Pupus (appetizers) first:
The entire time I keep repeating to myself:
Pay attention;
Listen to what they say, and what they don’t say;
Ask sweeping questions to see where it lands;
Write it all down – as much as I can;
Do your best to put food in your mouth so it’s not awkward – it is lunch;
Don’t drool or choke on food;
Let them breath and eat, don’t’ interrogate;

The main course:
Here are the nuggets that I scratched down between bird bites of noodles:

  • Don’t worry so much about a nighttime/bedtime routine, be more on purpose about your morning routine. One of them said “win the morning, win the day”.
  • Increase the value of your cooking/food prep time by making that a time to be with family. Cook and food prep together with partner and family.
  • Do affirmations on the regular. They both do – I can too.
  • Remember how good audible books can be for my convenient personal development time. Both mentors are voracious readers, I mean voracious.
  • The less meat and the more plants the better when it comes to daily food intake. One mentor is vegan.
  • Read one book a week.
  • Be on purpose about a personal and business contact and organization practices. One mentor has someone do this for them, the other does it with different personal email accounts. Both are incredibly organized with this.
  • We have 11x more “threat” brain receptors than we do “opportunity” receptors. How’s that for evidence about the importance of personal development and mind/heart training!
  • Only do for work what you LOVE.
  • It doesn’t really matter if people like you. Do they trust you? Do they respect you? That matters WAY more than if they like you.

I had lunch with these mentors and came out thinking bigger, more grounded and clear about what lies ahead. Not overly amped about it. It’s not excited high-energy, it’s on a mission for the long haul energy. It actually feels heavier and it also feels more clear. I got to have a $15,000 lunch with leaders and I wanted to invite you along. Thanks for joining me.

Dessert:
I have been obsessing over the book called TRIBES by Seth Godin. On page 43 he writes (regarding leaders), “They’re generous. They exist to help the tribe find something, to enable the tribe to thrive. But they understand that the most powerful way to enable is to be statue worthy: by getting out front, by making a point, by challenging convention, and by speaking up. Those are brave acts, and bravery begets statues.”

I had some extra cruise time with my son the following day. So we went to visit an important statue here in Hilo. While we were there I got one of those high fives from the universe that says “carry on Kim – you are doing it.”

One of our lunch guests has her name on the statue.

Statue worthy. It’s a thing.

Enjoy your lunch this week, spend it in good company. Mentors – it’s the jet fuel for your #coconutwirelesslife.

See you out there!
Aloha,
Kim
